about

Demo version of Murderer's Row from the forthcoming album The Starter Wife. Yes, the apostrophe is on purpose, possession is so much of the story.

This song was born on a black 2am stretch of interstate in South Dakota, on a long national tour, the last one I would do before my life would fall apart. Maybe I already knew, maybe I still had hope. In any case, we all look for comfort where we can. I found mine in the songs, even when the everything around me turned as impossibly dark as middle night I-90.

Honesty came hard for me, the real kind anyway. The kind you can only really reach when you have nothing left to hide behind. For me, the song both musically and lyrically, is like seeing the sunrise start to glitter along the horizon and the relief that day is finally coming.

lyrics

I have been the poison and I could be the cure
For whatever reason you never asked for any more
Than my unbridled passion, brushbacks and all
A cold rain comes down to wash away the score

I have struck out looking so many times that I’ve lost track
Found out just much it takes to break my back
Nothing ever came so quickly or took so long to go
As my place at your side on Murderer’s Row

Out on the lost highway where the darkness lingers
I found the light of the stars in the band around my finger
I’m a walking contradiction, but as I live and breathe
You were the one who made an honest woman out of me
